Chinese budget smartphone handset maker Xiaomi is targetting Internet of Things applications as its next growth area, and is attempting to break into the Japanese market for smart devices and connected device applications, according to Japanese business newspaper The Nikkei. Among the sectors Xiaomi is likely to target are smart connected home devices and smart retail technology.

The company is planning to use a subsidiary, Lumi United Technology, to front its thrust into the Japanese IoT market. Lumi has recently announced a partnership with Japanese smart building software developer Asteria. The Japanese company specialises in developing software to control HVAC, lighting and and building sensors.

The Japanese company also markets a building management system that employs AI called Gravio.

Xiaomi also plan expansion into other Asian IoT markets such as South Korea. The company will use its experience in Japan as the basis for further expansion into Asia.
