Vodafone has selected Taoglas Edge industrial-grade hardware and firmware connectivity for the Vodafone Business Invent application development platform. The platform allows the creation of custom-built IoT services for industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, energy, utilities and transportation.
Today, businesses are looking for ways to overcome the complexity of building next-generation IoT services, and to accelerate their adoption and deployment. The integration of Taoglas Edge with Vodafone’s Invent platform means businesses have immediate access to a connected IoT.
They can design, develop, pilot and deploy a range of bespoke IoT applications with a short and long-range wireless hardware and firmware platform, complete with various sensors. They can leverage the data analytics gathered from edge devices and sensors and integrate with Vodafone’s existing IoT managed connectivity platform, providing the speed and flexibility of a global IoT SIM, with industry-recognised security.
“The partnership between Vodafone and Taoglas helps IoT customers and their applications get to market on time the first time,” said Dermot O’Shea, co-CEO of Ireland-based Taoglas. “Successful adoption of IoT is all about enterprises using sophisticated intelligence from their IoT data to help them make more insightful decisions. A connectivity revolution is taking place and gaining more steam as companies like Vodafone roll out high-speed 5G networks worldwide. We have seen significant interest in IoT application development around industrial appliances, medical devices, smart grid, smart farming and animal health, asset tracking, predictive maintenance, and more.”
By combining Taoglas Edge and Vodafone’s suite of IoT services and global connectivity, businesses have the ability to create IoT services that can scale massively, offer enterprise-class security, and support comprehensive management across many different connected machines, systems, instruments and appliances.
Taoglas uses embedded low power AI machine learning in the edge to create intelligent products that can be battery powered and recognise and interact with the world around them, making decisions in real time without needing to compute back in the cloud.
“Vodafone is the global leader in providing IoT connectivity, with over 88.9 million connections worldwide,” said Debbie Power, IoT country manager for Vodafone in Ireland. “The recent introduction of our Invent platform, with the Taoglas Edge, will provide end-to-end IoT solutions for businesses of all sizes and will allow them to connect globally. This will help democratise the IoT landscape by giving businesses connectivity, device, app development, data insights, hosting and a fully managed service in one place.”
Taoglas has announced Edge Locate, a GNSS L1, L2 and E5 module that combines antenna, RF electronics and receiver technology delivering centimetre-level positioning.
With over 16 years of experience in designing IoT and wireless connectivity – along with the company’s recent acquisitions of ThinkWireless and Firmwave – Taoglas says it is equipping industry with the ability to future-proof IoT deployments and optimise location-based performance.
Traditionally, most IoT devices use single band GPS technology delivering on average 10m accuracy with existing GPS modules and antennas. Taoglas, in partnership with U-Blox, has created a smart antenna that uses multi-band GNSS technology, providing between 1 and 3cm-level accuracy.
With Edge Locate, manufacturers can build devices with centimetre-level positioning technology, without having to invest in costly and lengthy RF design, integration and testing processes. The device features multiband GNSS positioning that can be used with real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning capability. This enables location-specific, mission-critical services such as emergency response, smart infrastructure, precision agriculture and microbility mobility applications where precise location provides critical value to the IoT application. Taoglas can also consult and install the RTK network in any global location for any IoT use case.
“Centimetre-level positioning is absolutely key to the next-generation of IoT enabled applications,” said Ronan Quinlan, co-CEO of Taoglas. “Take an example from the burgeoning micro-mobility industry. When granting licences from a trial, the city authorities would like to monitor the riders of e-scooters, ensuring riders are staying off footpaths, or parking in designated areas. The problem is that today’s legacy GPS solutions don’t often know which side of the road a scooter is on. Whereas with our solution, fleet operators can pinpoint within just a few centimetres where a device is located. We do this by working with our customers to enable the whole solution and we make sure it works reliably in real life.”
Edge Locate can greatly accelerate the latest GNSS multiband product launch plans by offering a plug-and-play product that uses a common connector for integration into any electronics device. It also connects directly to the Taoglas Edge board for immediate connectivity options.
