Southern Company subsidiary PowerSecure has announced a strategic alliance with Advanced Microgrid Solutions (AMS) to develop and deploy behind-the-meter distributed energy resources across the USA.

With over 1.5GW of distributed energy resources under management, PowerSecure has built one of the country's largest fleets of microgrid services and will bring project design, engineering and technology to the alliance.

"As Southern Company grows our distributed infrastructure business throughout the country it is important that we continually maximise the value from these assets," said Southern Company CEO Thomas Fanning. "This strategic relationship between PowerSecure and AMS will uncover new ways for Southern Company to deliver value for energy consumers."

AMS, an early pioneer in the aggregation and optimisation of distributed energy resources, will provide asset management services through its Armada platform, identifying opportunities for grid services and revenue stacking.

"Southern Company's leadership in the distributed energy space is game-changing," said AMS CEO Susan Kennedy. "We are immensely proud to be working with PowerSecure and Southern Company to offer customers some of the most advanced distributed energy technologies in the world."

Through this alliance, PowerSecure will continue to build on its track record of providing customers greater control over their energy and service across multiple technologies. AMS will use its analytics and co-optimisation platform, Armada, and energy storage technology to lower energy expenses for customers while providing cost effective grid services to utilities.

Together, PowerSecure and AMS will work to accelerate the cost-effective deployment of distributed energy resources by enhancing consumers' ability to access market revenues, which should improve overall economics for future joint projects.

Southern Company has 46,000MW of generating capacity and serves nine million customers through its subsidiaries. Its subsidiary PowerSecure provides utility and energy technologies to electric utilities, and their industrial, institutional and commercial customers. PowerSecure has more than 1500 distributed generation systems installed across the USA.

AMS designs, optimises, aggregates and manages distributed energy resources and energy storage assets. Its energy storage asset management software Armada provides continuously optimised resource management, cost reduction and revenue generation for large-scale energy users and utilities.
