Quectel to launch combined LTE NB2 and GSM module at MWC

At next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Chinese IoT module company Quectel Wireless will launch its first LTE Cat NB2 and GSM dual-mode module. The BC97 supports switchover between GSM and NB-IoT networks and ensures network coverage of both technologies.
The BC97 is designed in a 23.6 by 19.9 by 2.2mm form factor, and is compatible with the firm's GSM-GPRS M95 module, which allows smooth migration and reduces cost and development time. In LCC+LGA form factor, the BC97 can realise the rapid production of modules through a standard SMT machine.
Features include low power consumption, extended operating temperature range and global dual-mode. It supports GSM voice and Bluetooth Low Energy. Thanks to all-in-one features and a set of interfaces – such as USB, USim, uart, ADC, Reset, PWRKey, SPI, GPIO, main antenna, especially audio interface mic and speak – as well as the DFOTA, it extends its coverage to multiple applications such as shared bikes, smart parking, Bluetooth gateway, smart metering, smart city, asset tracking, smart home appliance, wearable devices, agricultural and environmental monitoring devices.
"It is an irreversible trend for GSM to migrate to LTE and 5G networks," said Doron Zhang, Quectel senior vice president. “Nevertheless, with extensive global network presence and its vast coverage, it is foreseen that the GSM network will still be operational for many years, especially in certain developing countries. Since BC97 supports fallback from Cat NB2 to GSM, it can utilise the existing yet matured GSM network, hence would be gradually and seamlessly migrating into NB-IoT networks.
