Omron connects blood pressure monitor to Alexa
January 8, 2019
Omron Healthcare has launched what it claims is the first blood pressure monitor to offer connection to Alexa, the cloud-based voice service from Amazon.
Those who use an Omron connected blood pressure monitor that pairs to the Japanese brand's proprietary Omron Connect mobile application can ask Alexa to connect with and open their app, locate and read back their latest blood pressure reading, calculate their average reading over a day, week or month, and compare readings across different dates and times of day.
Working through the Omron Connect app, the Alexa skill can also call out higher-than-normal readings and provide guidelines and tips to ensure accurate blood pressure measurement. Those who use Alexa can also set reminders to learn to monitor their blood pressure regularly. Omron worked with Amazon to develop the Alexa skill to encourage regular blood pressure monitoring and better heart health habits.
"With our Going for Zero mission, we're focused on helping people build better habits for their heart health and adding our proprietary Omron Alexa skill is a major stride in that direction," said Omron Healthcare president and CEO Ranndy Kellogg. "Your blood pressure provides important health insights. Monitoring it regularly empowers you with knowledge, helps you act on your numbers sooner, and can even save your life."
The Omron Connect app syncs with all Omron connected blood pressure monitors so users can store, track and share their heart health data with their doctors for deeper heart health insights, which can help optimise treatment plans and lead to better health outcomes.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology blood pressure guidelines, 103 million Americans are now in the hypertensive range.
"High blood pressure affects nearly half of all US adults, according to the AHA guidelines," said Kellogg. “It's more important than ever for us to find new ways to connect with them and to help them understand and manage their condition.”
To enable the Omron skill, all that is needed is the Alexa app and the Omron Connect mobile app, which are available for free download from the Apple iOS or Google Play stores.
Omron Healthcare is a manufacturer and distributor of personal heart health and wellness products. Its products include home blood pressure monitors and electrotherapy devices. Omron invented its first blood pressure monitors more than 40 years ago.
