Washington-based Itron has become the first company to achieve G3-PLC certification for its smart meters, receiving certification for its Linky single-phase meters. G3-PLC certification verifies the performance, conformance and interoperability of smart meters that use G3 powerline carrier (PLC) communications technology. The Linky meters are part of ERDF’s (Électricité Réseau Distribution France) smart meter programme.

Certification testing was performed by Laboratoire des Applications Numériques, a third-party testing laboratory selected by the G3 PLC Alliance. The tests validate the interoperability of Itron’s Linky meter as well as its conformance to the G3-PLC protocol. Additional tests confirmed the meter’s performance, including communications robustness against various types of interference.

“Itron is proud to be the first company to achieve G3-PLC certification of our Linky smart meter,” said Mark de Vere White, president of Itron’s electricity business line. “This certification is a testament to Itron’s commitment to quality and a significant milestone for the second phase of the Linky smart grid programme. Smart grid technology will play an important role in helping ERDF drive increased energy efficiency, deliver more efficient service to its customers, improve distribution operations and manage integration of renewables. With the certification of our Linky G3 meter, Itron is prepared to support ERDF in realising this vision as it rolls out approximately 35 million smart meters.”

With thousands of employees supporting nearly 8000 customers in more than 100 countries, Itron applies knowledge and technology to manage energy and water resources.
