Huawei and Saudi Arabian utility Acwa Power are working together to develop the global solar power market and apply technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing to PV plant projects.

The companies signed a global memorandum of understanding at last month’s Sino-Saudi Investment Forum in Beijing.

Acwa Power cooperated with Huawei several times in 2018. In January, Acwa Power, Nomac and Huawei signed a comprehensive procurement agreement on the smart PV management system at the World Future Energy Summit. In December, Acwa and Huawei signed an inverter procurement agreement for the Sakaka 300MW project in Saudi Arabia, to which the Huawei FusionSolar 1500V smart PV is applied.

Singing the MoU is the further cooperation between the two sides after jointly developing the Sakaka project, the first large ground PV plant in Saudi Arabia. It is conducive to Saudi Arabia's energy development in compliance with the energy strategic transformation requirements of the country as part of its Vision 2030 strategy.

Khalid Bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Falih, minister of energy, industry and mineral resources in Saudi Arabia, said energy cooperation had played an important role in Sino-Saudi Arabia relations and that further cooperation between the two countries in the energy field was in the strategic interest of both sides.

In the future, Huawei says it will cooperate with Acwa Power in the forward-looking technology fields. Through technologies such as smart I-V curve diagnosis, AI algorithms and big data with AI, Huawei and Acwa plan to build a simplified PV system, improve the energy yield and operation and maintenance efficiency of PV plants, and accelerate the intelligent upgrade of PV energy in the Middle East.

Executives including Mohammd Abunayyan, chairman, Paddy Padmanathan, president and CEO, and Rajit Nanda, CIO, of Acwa Power attended the signing ceremony with Dennis Zhang, CEO of Huawei Saudi, and Steven Ma, general manager of Huawei Smart PV MEA.
