Honeywell smart metering targets natural gas industry
June 15, 2016
Honeywell has introduced an integrated portfolio of industrial IoT-ready natural gas transmission and data management products for North American gas transmission and distribution users.
These end-to-end smart metering systems help optimise the entire gas value chain, including applications from the wellhead to the burner tip.
“Natural gas providers need the tools and know-how to effectively store, transport and deliver gas to meet rising demand,” said Pierre Dufour, Honeywell Process Solutions global product marketing manager. “Gas metering data must be collected more frequently and in smaller increments. The trend towards smart metering has demonstrated the importance of meter data management in realising the full potential of advanced metering infrastructure.”
The gas measurement and data management products can help companies exercise control over their gas regulating and measuring needs at a lower cost. The integrated portfolio provides seamless connectivity and round-the-clock access to critical data and diagnostics. It is comprised of five main components:
- EC 350 PTZ gas volume corrector;
- Honeywell Elster rotary gas meter;
- Cloud Link 4G low-power wireless modem;
- MasterLink configuration and calibration software; and
- PowerSpring meter data management (MDM) software
“Honeywell’s Mercury instrument line pioneered precision instrumentation, and today it helps gas transmission and distribution companies increase efficiency, protect assets, save money and safeguard the environment,” Dufour said. “These products and services also enable optimal maintenance that extends the life of critical investments.”
The gas measurement and data management products are designed to turn operational data into valuable knowledge. Key to the product line is the MasterLink software, which provides a way to configure, calibrate and access data from electronic volume correctors and cellular modems. The software has been introduced for the first time on mobile platforms, with value-added features to help the user accomplish more than executing everyday tasks.
The Elster rotary gas meter is recognised for low pressure drop, wide range and high maximum operating pressure. The meter provides a reduction in hazardous noise for safer operations, as well as a reduction in piston speed for longer life. Users are said to benefit from simple installation and commissioning, a compact design, and ease of use. The unit can also be integrated with the EC 350 PTZ gas volume corrector for the convenience of single-vendor sourcing.
With this approach, users migrating from legacy gas measurement and control systems can deploy systems that are future-ready for emerging technologies such as the IIoT. The Mercury line is based on a single design standard and follows cyber and data security guidelines uniformly across all components.
Using the integrated platform for data collection, management and remote meter monitoring, gas operators can improve the output from equipment assets, avoid unplanned downtime, implement preventive maintenance, and increase RoI. By pairing MDM software with the latest instruments for gas measurement and volume correction, they are able to enhance efficiency, reduce costs and lower the risks to operation.
