Internet of Things platform provider Libelium has launched what it describes as new smart logistics modules to support real-time tracking in the vehicle fleet management, container goods control and asset management sectors.

The modules have been designed to provide position, sensing and transmission capabilities for real-time tracking over 3G, GPS and GPRS networks.

Libelium (Zaragoza, Spain) says the modules are capable of reading geolocation coordinates and can collect extra sensor data on humidity, luminosity, carbon emissions, temperature and vibration.

Data can then be sent to a web or cloud server for further analysis.

To assist developers, Libelium has also created libraries providing details of GPS and sensor data transmission and including an example of how information gathered with geographic information systems – such as Google GIS, Axeda or ESRI – can be integrated.

A tutorial on geopositioning with the Google Maps API is also available in Libelium’s technical guides.

“We design our hardware and systems for low-power consumption, a prerequisite for any logistics control network that collects and transmits data to the cloud in real time,” said David Gascon, the chief technology officer of Libelium. “Our sensor devices are battery powered with a life time of several years so they allow really easy maintenance when installed in vehicles and containers.”
