Honda joins efforts to spur V2G technology development

Japanese carmaker Honda says it has joined forces with eight other carmakers and 15 utilities to accelerate the development of emerging vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies.

Use of so-called V2G technology could lead to numerous benefits, allowing plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) to receive and respond to charging instructions based on grid conditions and the vehicle’s battery state.

The consortium in which Honda (Tokyo, Japan) is involved is being led by the Electric Power Research Institute, which says it plans to demonstrate a standards-based, open grid integration platform for PEVs.

Honda says that collaboration between global automakers developing PEVs and North American utilities is essential to maximize the potential of V2G integration.

“This project is an important step in enabling plug-in vehicles to reach their potential as a valuable distributed resource that can increase grid stability, improve power quality and reduce demand peaks,” said Steven Center, vice president of the environmental business development office at American Honda. “Honda is participating in several projects aimed at accelerating V2G integration, which has the potential to reduce the total cost of owning a plug-in vehicle while enabling higher concentrations of renewable energy.”

Honda is already working on several projects linked to V2G systems development, including an initiative that made use of IBM’s (Armonk, NY, USA) cloud-based PEV enablement platform.

It is also investigating ways of integrating home automation technologies with distributed renewable energy, the smart grid and the electric vehicle through its Honda Smart Home US program, which was launched in March 2014 at the University of California, Davis.
