Dutch telematics player TomTom has revealed it is to provide technology to insurance company Allianz France to support the rollout of new private motor insurance services.

The TomTom (Amsterdam, Netherlands) system will underpin the Allianz Conduite Connectee offer that Allianz France (Paris) is launching, said the companies in a statement.

Allianz Conduite Connectee allows French customers to assess their driving behavior through use of a smartphone app that gathers and processes data generated by the telematics unit in the vehicle.

The app is also designed so that policy holders can easily request roadside assistance should they need it.

TomTom says its platform processes a range of vehicle and driving performance data for the app – all of which is recorded by its LINK 100 device.

The hardware can easily be installed by Allianz France policy holders, plugging directly into a vehicle’s diagnostics port.

Motorists are set to benefit from receiving valuable feedback on mileage, acceleration, braking and cornering, and the system will automatically alert Mondial Assistance – a provider of emergency services – in the event of a vehicle crash.

“As a world leader we are at the forefront of innovation and our aim was to bring new services to our clients that help them to be safe on the road,” said Delphine Asseraf, the Head of Digital for Allianz France.

So-called usage-based insurance offerings are gaining in popularity because they lower the cost of insurance for drivers who exhibit good driving behavior.

They are also seen more broadly as a way of encouraging safer and more responsible driving, especially among younger drivers who have recently been awarded their licenses.

“This new insurance solution demonstrates the opportunities for developing innovative smartphone apps using actionable vehicle data,” said Thomas Schmidt, the managing director of TomTom Telematics. “Our system empowers motorists to improve their driving style, helping them to reduce fuel and maintenance costs, accidents and their carbon footprint.”
