Janssen introduces mobile health management service in UK

Mobile health specialist Janssen Healthcare Innovation has introduced a new health management service in the UK allowing customers to monitor their usage of prescribed medicines and treatments.

Named Care4Today, the service comprises a mobile app and website that generate medication dosing and repeat prescription reminders and allow caregivers to provide support over the network.

Janssen (San Diego, CA, USA) says failure to take medicines leads to major problems for patients as well as the wider UK economy, and is a leading cause of delayed recovery and hospitalization, with approximately £466 million ($784 million) spent on mediation-related hospitalizations each year and up to £150 million going on medicines that remain unused.

Research also suggests that just ten days after starting treatment a third of UK patients are not taking medicine as directed by healthcare professionals.

The Care4Today service can be used to monitor any medication by any manufacturer across any disease area, claims Janssen, and users can update the software to add medicines and treatments that are not pre-loaded.

The service also features built-in reports that will track when and how medicines are taken over a period of time.

Apps are available for download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play, and the web-based platform can be set up to send text-message reminders to people with more basic mobile phone handsets.

An individual’s profile can also be connected to a designated caregiver, who will be able to see whether the person has taken medication as prescribed and receive alerts if a dose has been missed.
