The trucking industry is about to get its first integrated, GPS fleet management service that includes performance and compliance management features, according to Verizon and consulting company JJ Keller & Associates.
Though a new partnership, network operator Verizon (New York City, NY, USA) is to incorporate the compliance system developed by JJ Keller (Neenah, WI, USA) with its own Networkfleet-branded fleet-management service.
The combined offering will allow customers to manage critical requirements – such as hours of service, driver vehicle inspection reports and fuel taxes – so they can better manage their Compliance, Safety and Accountability scores in line with regulatory requirements.
Under the arrangement, the JJ Keller electronic compliance functionality is to be embedded in Verizon Networkfleet hardware, which will then be able to seamlessly transfer data to the JJ Keller mobile app using Bluetooth technology.
“Due to increased regulatory scrutiny aimed at keeping the roads safer — including a potential regulation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requiring electronic logging of drivers’ hours of service — we recognized that the time was right to introduce a comprehensive and cost-effective compliance solution based on telematics,” said Joshua Haims, Verizon Networkfleet’s general manager. “Collaborating with JJ Keller, the leader in safety and compliance, is a natural fit.”
According to the partners, a study conducted by the Center for Truck and Bus Safety at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute – and commissioned by regulatory authorities – found that trucks equipped with electronic logs experienced a 53% lower driving-related hours-of-service violation rate, an 11.7% reduction in total crash rate and a 5.1% reduction in preventable crash rate.
The tie-up has already won plaudits from telematics market-research company CJ Driscoll and Associates (Palos Verdes Estates, CA, USA).
“Verizon Networkfleet and J.J. Keller are offering a different approach to the regional and long-haul trucking markets in developing a compliance solution that includes telematics-based features for improved driver safety and efficiency,” said Clement Driscoll, CJ Driscoll’s founder and president. “This offering will leverage the strengths of leaders in their respective fields.”
