Silicon Labs aims to simplify wireless smart meter development

Semiconductor developer Silicon Labs has introduced a new software product aimed at simplifying the development of wireless smart meters for electricity, gas and water customers.

The company is promoting its Wireless M-Bus software as a means of overcoming a number of challenges involved in rolling out smart meters.

It says the technology can support seamless communications between various types of smart utility meters, data concentrators, mobile readout devices and heat meters.

Because the protocol requires little “overhead” for the small amounts of data used by meters, it can also prolong battery life for up to 15–20 years.
Silicon Labs (Austin, TX, USA) says the technologies underpinning Wireless M-Bus have already become widely accepted during smart metering deployments in Europe and that interest in these technologies is now growing in other parts of the world.

Silicon Labs says its standards-based software has enabled smart meter developers to create competitive products that are easy to install and maintain, and has proven to be interoperable with software modules from various leading manufacturers.
