Tollgrade launches battery-free smart grid sensor

Tollgrade claims to have launched the industry’s first battery-free smart grid sensor for monitoring voltage and current.

The company’s LightHouse Medium Voltage Power Sensor is designed to require no calibration, batteries or additional pole-mounted equipment and is said to be capable of measuring voltage to an accuracy of 0.5%.

Tollgrade (Cranberry Township, PA, USA) says it will help utilities to modernize their networks while drastically reducing installation, operations and maintenance costs.

“Tollgrade is once again first to market with a game changing technology by introducing the only inductively powered smart grid sensor with 0.5% voltage measurement accuracy,” said Edward Kennedy, Tollgrade’s chief executive. “Best of all, it requires no calibration and supports operational efficiency programs such as Conservative Voltage Reduction and Volt/VAR optimization.”

Tollgrade says that by monitoring voltage utilities will be able to increase grid efficiency, but that other solutions – such as line post sensors – take several hours to be installed and often require more than one crew, while some sensors need batteries or solar panels that drive up maintenance costs.

It claims its own sensor is a “rugged” solution available for a fraction of the cost.

Because it is easier to install and requires no maintenance, it also opens up the possibility of opex savings for customers, says Tollgrade.

The company says the sensors will become available in the third quarter of 2014.
