Welltok acquires mobile health player Mindbloom

Welltok has acquired mobile health app developer Mindbloom in a move aimed at expanding its capabilities in the fast-developing telehealth sector.

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed by Welltok (Denver, CO, USA), which describes itself as a “pioneer in health optimization”.

The company did, however, indicate that it plans bolster its own CafeWell Health Optimization Platform through the Mindbloom (Seattle, WA, USA) takeover, providing customers with access to a range of health programs, content and applications.

“To profoundly change consumers’ health-related awareness, actions and behavior for the better, we need an effective and practical platform to become ingrained in their daily lives,” said Jeff Margolis, Welltok’s chairman and chief executive.

“We were impressed by the Mindbloom team’s ability to integrate behavioral science and user-centered design principles with health-related content to deliver a superior consumer experience,” he added.

Besides developing a number of gaming apps, Mindbloom has also collaborated with health plans and pharmacy retailers on mass-market services.

Welltok, meanwhile, claims to be changing the way that population health managers align consumer behavior with incentives and rewards.

It recently raised $22.1 million in a round of funding led by New Enterprise Associates, including investment from the IBM Watson Group (Armonk, NY, USA) as well as Qualcomm (San Diego, CA, USA).

Welltok says that capital is being used to accelerate the development of a CafeWell Concierge service it is launching in partnership with IBM Watson.

It also wants to expand its CafeWell Connect partner program, and integrate Mindbloom’s capabilities into the CafeWell platform.

“Adding a Pacific Northwest team also allows us to tap into the rich mobile, ecommerce and gaming expertise in the region,” said Margolis. “With Mindbloom on board, we are further strengthening our consumer DNA to help individuals optimize their health.”
