Satellite players LightSquared and ViaSat have teamed up to provide a managed mobile satellite service designed to support M2M, vehicular and aviation devices used in a range of settings.

The companies say the service will combine the power of LightSquared’s (Reston, VA, USA) SkyTerra 1 L-band satellite with all-IP satellite technology from ViaSat.

SkyTerra provides coverage across North America for small, low-cost devices, and ViaSat (Carlsbad, CA, USA) claims to be using the system to provide higher data throughputs for those devices than are normally possible on L-band legacy systems.

The companies say the managed service will address communications needs in consumer, enterprise and government sectors, and could be used support a range of M2M applications, including the monitoring of oil and gas flow through pipelines and the tracking of highly valued assets.

“Our strategic cooperation with ViaSat provides LightSquared with an expanded foundation for near- and long-term business opportunities,” said Doug Smith, chairman and chief executive of LightSquared. “This agreement gives new and current LightSquared partners access to a line-up of products and services with smaller form factors and will offer download speeds up to 10 times what they are able to achieve today.”

ViaSat said the combination of its technology with LightSquared’s would open up new opportunities for “a variety of mobile communicators”.

“The LightSquared SkyTerra 1 L-band satellite has brought the same kind of bold innovation to personal mobile communications that we’ve brought to satellite broadband with our high-capacity ViaSat-1 Ka-band satellite,” said Phil Berry, VP and general manager of MSS at ViaSat.
