Crnogorski Telekom boards smart home bandwagon

Montenegrin operator Crnogorski Telekom (CT) has launched a smart home service allowing customers to remotely monitor and control a range of home appliances as well as household security systems.

In a statement on its website, the operator – controlled by Germany’s Deutsche Telekom (Bonn) – said the new service would become available on December 8.

Customers of CT’s ADSL-based broadband services will be able to select from three smart home packages depending on how much they plan on making use of the technology.

Vanja Knezevic, a divisional manager at CT (Podgorica, Montenegro), said the smart home service would help to improve quality of life, allowing residents to manage heating and lighting systems and as well as window and door controls by means of mobile technology.

Smart home services in other markets have been designed to let customers program household appliances remotely – instructing lights to automatically switch on or off, for instance, when a resident enters or leaves the building.

That means the technology could also lead to substantial cost savings for CT’s customers.

Users will be able to issue instructions or receive data about the connected devices in their homes through PCs, smartphones and tablets.

Parent company Deutsche Telekom has also been making inroads into the smart home opportunity through its QIVICON platform, which aims to unite a variety of companies active in this area.

QIVICON already features a number of leading technology, energy and consumer electronics players, including EnBW (Karlsruhe, Germany), eQ-3 (Leer, Germany), Miele (Gutersloh, Germany) and Samsung (Seoul, South Korea), and is intended to support interoperability between software and devices from different players.

The operator has also launched its own smart home service in its domestic market, although it has yet to provide details about levels of interest among German consumers.
