Healthcare provider Florida Blue and Miami Children’s Hospital are giving patients access to a walk-in kiosk where they can undergo health checks and receive treatment for various conditions.

The kiosk is located at Florida Blue’s retail center in Miami and uses technology developed by HealthSpot (Dublin, OH, USA).

It comprises an enclosure outfitted with touchscreens, medical devices and videoconferencing capabilities, allowing medical providers to see and treat adults and children aged two and older.

The medical devices include a stethoscope, scale, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, thermometer, otoscope and magnascope that can transmit medical information to the provider and patient.

Florida Blue members can either make an appointment to use the kiosk or walk into the retail center and use the HealthSpot station for minor, common conditions such as fevers and colds.

Florida Blue says the initiative should help to reduce healthcare costs as well as improve the quality of care for members.

“Florida Blue believes innovation and collaboration efforts like this are critical to the future of healthcare,” said Florida Blue’s Penny Shaffer. “We are proud and excited to meet the growing needs of our members, by providing this convenient and affordable option to access care.”

HealthSpot, the provider of the kiosk technology, says it has combined cloud-based software with the use of digital medical devices and mobile applications to develop its service.

The company reckons its platform could dramatically transform the healthcare system by allowing patients to access healthcare services in a variety of locations.

“Our mission at HealthSpot is to create convenient and affordable access to high-quality care,” said Steve Cashman, HealthSpot’s chief executive. “We are thrilled to be able to work with Florida Blue and Miami Children’s to bring Florida families the opportunity to get the care they need, when and where they need it.”
