California based electric vehicle charging provider ChargePoint has announced an "ultra-fast" DC charging soltion for electric cars, buses and trucks. ChargePoint Express Plus can charge up to eight times faster than today's mainstream fast chargers. The company says that platform can add hundreds of miles of range in under 15 minutes.

ChargePoint says that Express Plus can charge today's newest electric vehicles, such as the Chevy Bolt EV, at their maximum rate and is also equipped to charge upcoming electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 and is ready to deliver maximum charging speed to electric vehicles coming to market in the years to come.

Designed both for businesses and charging centres along major roadways or transit depots, Express Plus can deliver up to 400 kilowatts (kW) to an electric vehicle.

ChargePoint is aiming to meet the need for ubiquitous charging networks that support both local and long-distance electric travel. The company points to research by Bloomberg New Energy Finance that claims electric vehicles with more than 200 miles of range will accelerate already rapid electric vehicle sales growth, and will reach 35 percent of global new car sales by 2040. The company says that ChargePoint Express Plus can address current charging requirements with a platform that will allow site owners to add capacity to meet future demand.

"Express Plus is a platform built to support ChargePoint's vision for the future of DC fast charging: ultra-fast, scalable and incredibly efficient charging that's conveniently located where drivers need it for long trips," said Pasquale Romano, CEO of ChargePoint. "Express Plus charging centers can start small and grow as needed by adding charging capacity without further construction. Together with our commercial and residential charging solutions, Express Plus completes the technology offering required to make fully electric transit a reality."

ChargePoint says that the Express Plus complements its existing range of charging technologies. The company already markets the Express 250, a standalone DC fast charging station capable of adding 90 miles of range in 30 minutes. ChargePoint Cloud Services is designed to make it easier for organisations to offer electric vehicle charging, with 24/7 driver support, proactive monitoring and comprehensive warranty coverage for stations.
