CalAmp, a California-based provider of wireless products, announced at last week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the TTU-2840XTreme, a high-value asset tracking device designed to operate in extreme environmental conditions. The dustproof and waterproof rugged device is for tracking trailers, containers and other assets and recreational vehicles that are exposed to the elements.

The device passed certification testing to the IEC IP68 standard for ingress protection.

It includes an integrated rechargeable battery with an intelligent power management system that enables efficient battery charging while operating on vehicle power, as well as uninterrupted connectivity when detached and vehicle power is no longer available. The device employs the Boston-Power Swing 5300 high-density lithium-ion cell that extends operating ranges between -40 and +70ËšC and charging temperatures between -20 and +60ËšC.

The device incorporates GPS technology, supports options for various global cellular standards including LTE, GPRS, CDMA 1xRTT and HSPA, and is compatible with 12 and 24V vehicle power systems. With patented internal antennas for both cellular and GPS, it is flexible and can be mounted virtually anywhere for simple, straightforward installations.

"The TTU-2840Xtreme delivers accurate tracking in the most unforgiving of environments," said Greg Gower, senior vice president at CalAmp. "With a compact, sealed form factor and state-of-the-art extended operating battery technology, this device is designed to provide superior performance and reliability under demanding operating conditions."

It uses the company's on-board alert engine, Peg (programmable event generator), which continuously monitors the vehicle environment and responds instantly to predefined threshold conditions such as time, date, motion, location, geo-zone and directly instrumented inputs. It also leverages CalAmp's proprietary Puls™ (programming, update and logistics system) over-the-air device provisioning and maintenance software for comprehensive, full lifecycle support.

CalAmp's portfolio of intelligent communications devices, robust and scalable cloud service platform, and targeted software applications are for streamlining otherwise complex M2M deployments.
